My take on free anime

My thoughts on streaming anime legally

Its been well over 2 months since the shut down of the illegal anime streaming giant, Kissanime and very soon after they shut down the website is back and running on a different name of Kissanimex.

Why Kissanime got banned

Kissanime took down their website after the Japanese parliament brought in new laws which are aiming to help to tighten copyright ownership and also crack down on pirate websites like Kissanime, the ban will come to effect on January 2021, the ban on pirate sites was enacted on October of 2020. Why this ban came to place is simple, Kissanime attracts a lot of people daily cause it’s very easy to access and gives access to lost titles like Battle Angel which are no longer distributed anywhere, cause of this Kissanime gets ton ad revenue from their ad clouded webpage. This did not go well with several production companies as their properties are not producing money for them, even though they have rights to them legally. As anyone worried about their products sold illegally would do, the government made laws which favour the companies.

The effects

Like any major event, the internet was shaken after this revelation which, obviously lead to the influx of memes and rants for and against this ban. Many anime-loving otakus were enraged as this site provided anime to regions where they were inaccessible and many prominent anime sites like Crunchyroll and Funimation are not present. Personally, the whole ban was a bunch of mixed emotions, I felt like it was the right thing which had to be done and most of it was meh I have Netflix (and Prime video all sponsored by my uncle) and some of it was mourning the death of your goldfish, one dies and you always get a new one. I think everyone expected the site to close down at some point but never knew when the time would come. And Kissanime is one of the worst sites to watch anime, simply because of ads. I have 2 ad blockers installed and it still does not close those ads and the full-page ad has a close button size rivalling an atom.

The aftermath

Pirate sites are goldfish, you know it’s going to die and you always get a new one. But the problem is people forgot where they can watch anime and went about mourning Kissanime, most of the people do not even know the existence of Kissanimex. To fill this power vacuum several anime production companies partnered together to form an alliance of sort and start a youtube channel, like every

company nowadays. I was thrown off initially seeing Isekai Quartet streaming in high quality, and I thought it was some dude pirating anime from sites and posting it on youtube. But I was wrong, I came to realise the youtube channel was a legitimate anime publishing channel after I started watching the second season of No Guns Life which aired on Muse Asia (one of the legitimate streaming channel with a lot of good titles) and came across the news of anime being published on youtube for an international audience with a very low price of FREE!!! And targeted youtube ads obviously.

The future

The Muse Asia channel has over 1 million subs and has a lot of old memorable shows like Hyouka, One punch man season 1 and a lot of new shows like God of highschool, Kuma kuma kuma bear, Moriarty the patriot (both of which are airing) under their belt. Many other channels are there like Anilog, Anime-one which also have some recognisable shows under their belt. Since these shows airing on youtube the most used video platform on the planet and cater to an international audience, there is a very high chance this will be very beneficial and profitable for the producers and watchers and introduces anime to many people in the world. So watch anime legally so we can bring more shows to the platform.

My recommendations

I would say Muse Asia is the most accessible
as many of these streaming channels are limited to Japan, which will not be a problem when you have a VPN. the other limitation is that they have very unpopular shows and not many major titles, which will lead you to use pirate websites. Before you go Kisanimex, I know you are tired of the ads and singles in your area so, I have an alternative for you, use aniwatch instead. It’s a pirate site, as usual, the only twist they do not believe ads and they have a growing catalogue of anime. It’s safe and secure for the amount of time I have used it and this is not a sponsored article I simply want people to enjoy the experience of watching anime with no interruptions.
